Monday Tidbits for October 15: Babies & Weddings & Tours, Oh My

The busy royal month continues:

--If you missed any of our coverage from Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's wedding this weekend, you can find it all here. For those that missed the wedding or want to rewatch, the royal family has now uploaded the whole thing here. [YouTube]

--The Duke and Duchess of Sussex landed in Australia ahead of their tour and the Invictus Games. Obviously the tour is something you'll be seeing around here, mixed in with everything else. Also there's this tiny bit of news:
Congrats to the couple! (For those wondering about the upcoming tour portions in Fiji and Tonga - where the Zika virus is a risk - they've taken medical advice and decided to go ahead as planned. Please do not second guess their medical decisions here.) [YouTube, Telegraph]

--The Court Circular revealed a new honor for Harry: "The Queen has been pleased to appoint The Duke of Sussex as a Personal Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty with effect from 13th October, 2018." The Queen has bestowed this honorary designation on several senior royal men (Philip, Charles, William, Andrew, Edward, Tim). It doesn't come with a bunch of extra duties, really, but it does mean that Harry will add an aiguillette (ornamental gold braids at the shoulder) to his uniform, like the Duke of Cambridge has below.

--The Danish crown princely family showed their support for the Invictus Games on social media last week. Crown Prince Frederik's making the trip to Australia to attend.

--Frederik and Mary and the kids also paid a visit to the Amalienborg Museum exhibition showcasing Queen Margrethe's design, sharing a video of the kids following in their crafty grandma's footsteps. [Instagram, YouTube]

--The Swedes got in on the quality family museum time last week, too. King Carl Gustaf, Crown Princess Victoria, and Princess Estelle made a special visit to the National Museum before the King officially reopened it after a lengthy renovation. [Instagram]

Royal Outfits of the Day: Swedish Royals at Parliament & More

It was Sweden's turn to open parliament this week, with the Swedish royal family present as always.

The ladies do a black and white (and shades thereof, in this case) dress code, which is reminiscent of the black and white court dress worn decades ago. This year that led to Crown Princess Victoria wearing a Paule Ka top she's worn previously to this same event. I'm half wishing Princess Sofia's jacket had a beige bottom, thereby completing the fake out crop top effect. Just for kicks.

The looks were likewise tame for the evening's concert. Feels a little more day attire than it usually does, really just shiny fabrics here to differentiate. Except for Victoria's metallic Escada dress, which has been worn multiple times in the past.

While we're in Sweden: Princess Sofia attended a board meeting for Sophiahemmet yesterday and this look might have caught my eye more than the parliament stuff did. Nothing says cozy like a giant smocked velvet turtleneck, amirite? Cozy or claustrophobic, depending on your turtleneck tolerance. You be the judge.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Victoria and Mathilde in New York

The UN General Assembly is running in New York City, so basically a whole bunch of royals are roaming the city and running into one another, which is convenient for our purposes. (Our purposes being, as always, considerably more frivolous.)

Crown Princess Victoria's stateside visit saw her meet up with Sheikha Mozah! If anyone's going to appreciate a good monochrome look, it should be the Sheikha. Her metallic shoes are exactly the contrasting touch her own green look needed, though.

Also on Victoria's list of friends to see in NYC: Crown Prince Haakon, who surely conveyed this prairie dress sighting to certain interested parties back home. This is a repeat from Princess Adrienne's christening this summer.

A new floral dress accompanied the Crown Princess as she met up with a vibrantly pink-clad Queen Mathilde, who...

...naturally brought along her own supply of florals. (Don't leave home without 'em!) This Natan dress a repeat from the Australian state visit earlier this summer. As I suspected at the time, it is indeed improved without the hat.

This is far from all! Queen Máxima is expected, Crown Princess Mary's already there (we'll check in with her separately), and maybe more, I don't know. So New Yorkers, I guess you should keep your eyes peeled.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Swedish Royals Host the Sweden Dinner

King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Sofia were on hand Friday to host the annual "Sweden Dinner" at the palace. The dinner honors guests making contributions in different areas from all around the country.

My hands-down fave here: Victoria. Looooooove this off the shoulder look for her. Sure, I'd ditch the watch and go with some strappy sandals - there's always room for a quibble or two - but it's very pretty. It's a fairly inexpensive choice for her too, $273 from By Malina.

I realize some may find this a little too informal when there are men in tuxes. For that, though, you must consider the context of the event:

In that context, then, it appears that Queen Silvia's motto for the evening was simply to be seen. Print on print, texture on texture, color on color. It's...a look, alright.

In comparison, Princess Sofia's shimmering pink seems incredibly tame. We previously saw this Stylein dress all tiara'd up; is it missing something without the extra sparkle? I vote yes.

Monday Tidbits for September 17: Monarchs and Regalia

Let's start with some awwws:

--Remember Princess Madeleine's tea party, where she donned a full tiara getup to entertain kids dealing with serious illness? Last week, it was King Carl Gustaf's turn. Seven-year-old Akram, who has leukemia, was welcomed to the palace with the full ambassador treatment - including meeting a king in uniform with a sword and the whole deal. The visit was also coordinated through Min Stora Dag (My Big Day). The royal court's Instagram has a video and more pics.

--Another Swedish update: Swedish authorities arrested someone in connection with the theft of royal regalia that happened in August. The stolen goods - two crowns and an orb - have not been recovered. [AP]

--Certainly you want to see some footage of Queen Margrethe in crafty mode, including trying on the hat/mask things she's making. She is a treasure. The Danish royal court released the footage in advance of an exhibition of the scenery and costumes created by the Queen. "Eventyrdronningen" ("Adventure Queen") opens later this month at the Amalienborg Museum. [YouTube]

Wednesday Tidbits for September 5: Anniversaries and More

Here we go again:

--As noted last week, King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a church service, plus a later private dinner. Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore an Emilia Wickstead dress also owned by the Countess of Wessex; Queen Sonja wore her gift from the King, a gold rose brooch. The royal ladies wore commemorative bow medallions designed by Sonja. [NRK]

--From an earlier Mette-Marit engagement, this made me laugh: How do those royal ladies cope with high heels on duty? By throwing a pair of UGG slides in the car for immediate relief. [Twitter]

--Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia released a new picture of little nugget Prince Gabriel for his first birthday!

--This is devastating: Brazil's National Museum, one of the largest museums of natural history in the Americas, was gutted in a major fire on Sunday night. Officials say almost 90% of their priceless collection has been destroyed. The building itself is another big loss; its rich history includes use as a residence for the Portuguese royal family and later for the Brazilian imperial family. [Guardian, BBC]

--Over at the Jewel Vault, QEII enjoyed a giggly day out with Anne and Chaz, and brought one of her famous diamonds along for the summer holiday.

--And finally, a little respect for another kind of queen: The Band of the Welsh Guards played "Respect" during the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace on Friday, the day of Aretha Franklin's funeral.

Monday Tidbits for August 27: Traditional Visits and More

Things are picking up. But first:

--You want traditional dress? Here's your traditional dress: Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, and their children visited the Faroe Islands last week on the royal yacht. The visit was a mix of events in traditional Faroese dress, including a bit of traditional dancing, with some casual stuff thrown in. The Danish royal family explained that the national costumes and accompanying silver were gifts from the government and various municipalities, making them an extra appropriate choice. --Over in Sweden, another young one was on duty: Prince Alexander made his first official visit to his duchy, Södermanland, where he opened his christening gift of an accessibility-oriented lookout point in a nature reserve. He was joined by his entourage, a.k.a. his parents, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. Sofia's choice of white pants for this woodsy occasion reminds me, as ever, that it must be nice to probably not have to do your own laundry. [Svenskdam]

--Looks like an exhibition of the Duchess of Sussex's wedding gown at Windsor Castle might be in the works. [Express]

Royal Trip of the Day: Victoria in Estonia, Plus Portraits

The Swedish royal family squeezed in a little official trip and dumped a bunch of new photos on us recently. For this summer kindness, we shall give them a post all their own.

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel visited Estonia to mark the country's 100th anniversary of independence. Victoria showed up looking, well, not unlike the Estonian flag in a repeated Dolce & Gabbana dress first worn during the celebrations for King Carl Gustaf's 70th birthday. I miss the big hat she wore it with that time around, honestly.

The Dolce & Gabbana wasn't the only prior special occasion dress that made the cut for the trip; Victoria also repeated the Elie Saab dress from Prince Alexander's christening. (Queen Máxima owns this one, too.) A speedy visit, but worthy of a trip through her special occasion wardrobe. (See a few more pics here.)

Tuesday Tidbits for August 7: Updates from Sweden

Welcome to the summer slow season, where the royal news and appearances slow waaaaaaaay down, and so does the blog. Posts may be a little sporadic until things pick back up, so don't worry if you don't see one every day and enjoy a little summer yourself!

The Swedish royal family kept the royal news mill running last week:

--Princess Madeleine provided the most surprising news, as the Swedish royal court announced that her family will be moving back to the United States! They'll move to Florida in the fall. According to the announcement, it's a good time for the family since the kids are still pre-school age, and Madeleine will be focusing on the World Childhood Foundation's United States work. They released a new family photo to go along with the news.

--Princess Christina, sister of King Carl Gustaf, also chimed in with some big news: she's retiring! In an interview for her 75th birthday (which was August 3rd), she said the milestone birthday will mark the end of her royal duties. She will be missed, but she deserves the rest. Some new pictures were taken in conjunction with that, too. [Instagram]

--In regular Swedish news, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia shared a picture of their two boys enjoying the summer at Solliden. [Instagram]

--With the (as yet unsolved) mystery of the stolen Swedish royal regalia still swirling in my brain, I couldn't help but find this story fascinating: A Willem de Kooning painting worth an estimated $160 million was discovered some 30 years after it was stolen from an Arizona museum. The whys and hows of the situation remain an intriguing set of question marks. [Washington Post]

--And finally, a non-Swedish note: QEII has begun her Balmoral holiday (she's been there for a couple weeks), and we have our annual big Balmoral post up at the Jewel Vault, where you'll find all her appearances during her Scottish break.

Wednesday Tidbits for August 1: Stolen Crown Jewels and More

Interesting but sad news to start us off:

--A jewel heist! Unfortunately not for fun in a movie this time: Sweden is missing two crowns and an orb from their royal regalia after thieves stole them from a church yesterday. The funeral crowns of Karl IV and his wife Queen Kristina date from 1611 and were originally buried with the couple, before being exhumed for display. Those two crowns and an orb were on display at Strängnäs Cathedral when they were stolen from their glass case while the church was open to the public. The thieves are thought to have fled on motorboat. The search for these priceless items is ongoing as of this writing. [Sydney Morning Herald]

--Were it anyone else, I'd have to say the matching band around the hat was overkill. But it's Princess Alexandra (opening a new supported living service last week), so it just makes me smile.

--The Duchess of Cornwall continued to live her best life last week, eating ice cream and hanging with Dame Judi Dench on the Isle of Wight. [ITV]

--And finally, Queen Margrethe continues to live her best creative life, showing off the new antependium she embroidered for the Gråsten Palace church.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Crown Princess Victoria's 41st Birthday

You know the equation: birthday + one of the Scandinavian monarchies = new birthday portrait!

Crown Princess Victoria's portrait for her 41st birthday is a bit of a blank canvas all around. Using a blank canvas to showcase the delicate diamond floral brooch she received from Princess Lilian's not a bad idea, though.

When you're Crown Princess Victoria, your birthday equation also means a full day of public festivities, first greeting well wishers outside Solliden Palace, the royal family's summer home on the island of Öland, and then a public concert.

You can add in a dress fresh from the prairie to your birthday celebrations, if you must. It's your birthday, be as trendy as you want.

Princess Estelle's first dress would be the lone non-floral pattern of the day, as it turned out.

At the evening concert, Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria wore the folk dress of the region, as they always do (and as we just saw them do earlier this month), while everyone else went floral and flowy. (Except the men. They wore suits.)

Princess Madeleine came prepared to prevent dangerous upper arm overheating, with what I like to imagine is an itsy bitsy picnic basket at the side. Toss in some minibar-sized drinks, and your summer concert experience just improved exponentially.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Princess Sofia was paying direct homage to her sister-in-law on her birthday. Victoria wore this same print (by the brand & Other Stories) on a different style of dress back in April. Sofia's version leaves a little more room to breathe, so I think she got the upper hand of this floral double act.

Monday Tidbits for July 9: Upcoming Sparkle and More

Let's go:

--A promising announcement from last week: King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will make a state visit to the United Kingdom, visiting the British royal family on October 23 and 24! Bring on the bling. Interested in what past Dutch/U.K. visits have brought in the sparkle department? Check out them out at the Jewel Vault: Britain visits the Netherlands in 1958, the Netherlands visits Britain in 1972 and again in 1982, and a couple official visits from Britain to the Netherlands.

--Crown Princess Victoria was named Öland Inhabitant of the Year in a ceremony at Solliden Palace, the Swedish royal family's summer home on the island. Victoria and her mother wore the folk dress of the area, which we also see them wear during Victoria's annual birthday celebrations.

--Wimbledon is underway and the daily watch of the royal box is ongoing. Here's an interview with the Duchess of Kent, who presented the trophies for many years. Among the Wimbledon memories shared are her thoughts on the moment she famously comforted Jana Novotná in 1993.

--Just a lovely picture of the Princess Royal at the Highland Theological College Graduation Ceremony and Foundation Day, that's all. Nice when one's robes work out to match one's dress.

--And finally, it was Holyrood Week over at the Jewel Vault. Highlights included a garden party, a lovely repeat outfit, and the splendor of the Order of the Thistle Service.

Monday Tidbits for June 18: A Tiara Return and More

Another busy royal week ahead, but first:

--It's the return of the Spencer Tiara! The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the wedding of Harry's cousin, Celia McCorquodale, over the weekend. I am more interested in the tiara than anything else here, it's nice to see it in action again. [The Sun]

--The Duke and Duchess of Kent attended a memorial last week for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, which prompted Buckingham Palace to reveal that the Duchess has returned to teaching music part-time at a school attended by children who lived in the building and area. [Instagram, Express]

--Over at the Jewel Vault, we covered the Queen's day out with the Duchess of Sussex, as well as a weekend outing with - shock! - no brooch.

--Prince Nicolas turned 3 on June 15, so of course we have a new picture of the birthday boy.

--And finally, Sotheby's is auctioning a selection of important royal jewels from the Bourbon Parma family, including some that reportedly belonged to Marie Antoinette. I think we'll be talking about this more in depth later. [Forbes]

Royal Outfits of the Day: Swedish Royals at the Polar Music Prize

The Polar Music Prize was awarded yesterday, to the Afghanistan National Institute of Music and Metallica, with the Swedish royal family in attendance.

Crown Princess Victoria is usually the one to watch at this event, according to me, because she often uses it as an opportunity for some "edgier" garb. Sometimes that strategy works for her; sometimes it doesn't; sometimes it just proves that even the "edgy" side of a royal wardrobe is, in fact, not very edgy at all.

Let 2018 go down as a year where that strategy netted her both the first and the third results: this red toga-style Stylein dress may not be too much of a stretch, but it really works for her. That's a stunning look! I did want to find a picture to share where she wasn't holding the bouquet, though, because tucking her clutch under her arm messed with the sleek lines. That's my caveat #1. Caveat #2 is her black strappy shoes, a clunky end to an outfit with otherwise gold accessories.

Those gold accessories included jewelry from Maria Nilsdotter. The Cherry Valley earrings have one longer earring and one shorter one, a great play to balance the one shoulder on the gown. Victoria also wore the Spike headband, which at first made me wonder from far away if she'd worn her 18th Birthday Tiara for some unknown reason. (That was enlightening, because I learned that there is one occasion on which I wouldn't mind seeing that thing, and that occasion would be a non-tiara occasion.) The gold, of course, was a better match.

Meanwhile, Princess Madeleine's Giambattista Valli dress is stepping all over Crown Princess Mette-Marit's signature territory (M-M, I can only imagine, either has this one in her closet already or will be swiftly making some calls), and Princess Sofia is knocking it out of the park.

Knocking it out of the park, I say! She's really proving this week that green is her color. And that a halter neck is her neckline. And that statement jewelry is her best accessory. I'm surprised at how much I love this whole thing. I might be making a note for the best of 2018.

Let's not forget about Queen Silvia, of course, who wore a tidy black skirt, evening jacket, and pearls. We can always count on her to add a final stately note to the family group.

Royal Flashback of the Day: Princess Madeleine's Christening Looks

Swedish royal christenings have been very good to Princess Madeleine, sartorially. Or, I should say, she's made them very good. A flashback of her looks during the recent run of Swedish christening fun - and in case you weren't keeping count, that's been a serious run; they've had seven of them in the last six years! - reveals two of my all-time favorite Madeleine outfits and only one I'd say was a disaster. That's not a bad record. Not bad at all. (Click the kids' names to return to the individual christening posts.)

The first one turns out to be the most forgettable, this lavender belted coat with veil headpiece. I remember it mostly because she made the delicious choice to use diamond drops from the Connaught Tiara as earrings.

Two years later and it's Madeleine's turn to hold the baby. The first of her three was marked in a lace dress by Valentino which was very sweet and very short and very pink and very veiled. (I still think the veil with nothing much else to it looks silly.)

Oh, but the second time was the charm, for this is one of those all-time faves. A Valentino so rich for the October season - and such a welcome break from all the pastels these christenings tend to produce - and so perfectly coordinated by bringing the color from the bottom of the skirt up to the fascinator. LOVE.

She followed that all-time fave with the other all-time fave: the very best royal interpretation of the SLEEVES trend (sorry, Máxima), in a pink Roksanda Ilincic dress. Another fascinator is well deployed here. Best to leave all the volume to the SLEEVES.

Madeleine has a knack for picking the best from the Erdem pile. (Another example made your Best of 2017 list.) This one was practical, too; left all the froof at home and out of the way for the kid wrangling.

One disaster, I said. Here it is. (She was pregnant with Princess Adrienne at the time.) The Valentino dress is kind of juvenile and it doesn't work with the coat, which she left on throughout the service. The whole thing feels more haphazard than we've come to expect from her.

The latest addition to the christening outfit collection is, if nothing else, a return to a totally pulled together look. The Giambattista Valli dress, the flower crown, and the pieces of the Cameo parure make a pretty and carefully coordinated picture. My third favorite of the pack.
