The busy royal month continues:

--If you missed any of our coverage from Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's wedding this weekend, you can find it all here. For those that missed the wedding or want to rewatch, the royal family has now uploaded the whole thing here. [YouTube]

--The Duke and Duchess of Sussex landed in Australia ahead of their tour and the Invictus Games. Obviously the tour is something you'll be seeing around here, mixed in with everything else. Also there's this tiny bit of news:
Congrats to the couple! (For those wondering about the upcoming tour portions in Fiji and Tonga - where the Zika virus is a risk - they've taken medical advice and decided to go ahead as planned. Please do not second guess their medical decisions here.) [YouTube, Telegraph]

--The Court Circular revealed a new honor for Harry: "The Queen has been pleased to appoint The Duke of Sussex as a Personal Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty with effect from 13th October, 2018." The Queen has bestowed this honorary designation on several senior royal men (Philip, Charles, William, Andrew, Edward, Tim). It doesn't come with a bunch of extra duties, really, but it does mean that Harry will add an aiguillette (ornamental gold braids at the shoulder) to his uniform, like the Duke of Cambridge has below.
The aiguillette (gold braids) on William's shoulder marks him as a Personal Aide-de-Camp to the Queen. We'll now see Harry with the same.

--The Danish crown princely family showed their support for the Invictus Games on social media last week. Crown Prince Frederik's making the trip to Australia to attend.

--Frederik and Mary and the kids also paid a visit to the Amalienborg Museum exhibition showcasing Queen Margrethe's design, sharing a video of the kids following in their crafty grandma's footsteps. [Instagram, YouTube]

--The Swedes got in on the quality family museum time last week, too. King Carl Gustaf, Crown Princess Victoria, and Princess Estelle made a special visit to the National Museum before the King officially reopened it after a lengthy renovation. [Instagram]

More details on three of October's biggest royal events, plus some exhibitions worth checking out:

--Princess Eugenie marries Jack Brooksbank on Friday! The wedding at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, begins at 11 am and will be televised. (Here's a time zone converter.) In the UK, it will air on ITV start at 9:25 am and run through 12:30 pm. In the US, TLC will broadcast starting at 4:25 am Eastern and encoring at 7:25 am Eastern/Pacific. (The wedding starts at 6 am Eastern.) It will be able to stream on the TLC Go app after the broadcast. The royal family also released a bunch of extra details about the wedding over the weekend. We will cover the festivities here. (But please, for those looking to discuss the York wedding, read the note at the bottom of this post.) [Twitter]

--Details for the Dutch state visit to the United Kingdom were released yesterday. The state visit happens on October 23rd and 24th. The state banquet will be held on day one and it will be the only evening event. The Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex will accompany King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima for parts of the visit. Details of which British royal family members will attend the state banquet have not been released. [Dutch Royal House]

--Exhibition heads up #1: An opportunity to see the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara in the flesh diamonds is approaching! It will be a centerpiece of the "Russia, Royalty & The Romanovs" exhibition at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace. The display starts on November 9 and runs through April 28, 2019. Queen Victoria's Hesse Diamond Jubilee Brooch, currently worn by the Duchess of Cornwall, will also be a part of the exhibition. [Daily Mail]

--An itinerary for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's visit to Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand was released last week. They'll be on tour October 16-31. [Royal Family]

--Over at the Jewel Vault, the Queen's time at Balmoral is drawing to a close.

--And finally, exhibition heads up #2: San Francisco, you have an opportunity to see some of the exquisite couture of Sheikha Mozah in person. "Contemporary Muslim Fashions" at the de Young Museum includes four outfits from the sheikha. It runs through January 6. [Hollywood Reporter]

A note regarding the upcoming York wedding: For weeks, whether or not Princess Eugenie should have a televised wedding with this much "to-do" has been a topic of discussion in the comments. That issue is no longer up for discussion on this blog. Unfortunately, it has turned into a dumping ground for those who don't care for the people in this branch of the family - and those sorts of comments are against our comment policy. Thank you for helping keep this a pleasant place to be.

Shockingly enough, we have more wedding business on our hands:

--Nicholas de Roumanie Medforth-Mills, formerly Prince Nicholas of Romania, and Alina Maria Binder held their religious wedding in Romania this weekend. The couple were married civilly last year. The bride stated in a previous interview that she would use a designer from Bucharest for her dress, which includes hand embroidery in the Romanian tradition. Nicholas is the grandson of the late King Michael I and at one point in time held a place in the line of succession to the (defunct) throne as well as the title of prince, but his succession rights and title were withdrawn in 2015. Family relations are strained; neither his mother, Princess Elena, nor his aunt, Margarita, Custodian of the Crown, were at the wedding. [YouTube]

--The Earl and Countess of Wessex paid a visit to Ireland, giving me a chance to see the gorgeous color of this repeated Emilia Wickstead dress again. The Countess of Wessex Blog has full coverage of day 1 here and here, and day 2 here.
Royal Family

--Queen Paola was brought home to Belgium after suffering what the palace said was a mild stroke while on vacation in Italy last week. She's said to be recovering quickly and is already home from the hospital. [RTBF]

--And finally, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie joined Queen Margrethe last week for the opening of a new exhibition showcasing some of her fairy tale designs. That one would be fun to see.

Cue up the Wedding March, again:

--New royal documentary coming: Queen of the World details Queen Elizabeth II's role as head of the Commonwealth and airs September 25th on ITV or October 1st on HBO. It includes comments from the Duchess of Sussex on her wedding gown and and wedding day. One tidbit is the reveal that her veil included "something blue": a bit of fabric from a blue dress she wore on her first date with Prince Harry. That caps a big week for Meghan, with the launch of the wonderful cookbook initiative for the families of the Grenfell fire. [ITV, Sky]

--In Japan, the official wedding date for Princess Ayako and Kei Moriya was set with another traditional ceremony. They'll marry on October 29. [Imperial Family of Japan Blog]

--Another Windsor wedding on the horizon: Lady Gabriella Windsor, daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, is engaged to Tom Kingston. [Telegraph]

--An opportunity to see the newest royal tiara in person: Princess Marie's Nuits Claires Tiara will join "The Splendour of Power" exhibition at Koldinghus from September 28 - October 21. The exhibition includes multiple other royal tiaras. [TV Syd]

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault, the Balmoral break rolls on with church stuff and other stuff.

Coming up this week: Mary and more...

Let's start with some awwws:

--Remember Princess Madeleine's tea party, where she donned a full tiara getup to entertain kids dealing with serious illness? Last week, it was King Carl Gustaf's turn. Seven-year-old Akram, who has leukemia, was welcomed to the palace with the full ambassador treatment - including meeting a king in uniform with a sword and the whole deal. The visit was also coordinated through Min Stora Dag (My Big Day). The royal court's Instagram has a video and more pics.
Raphael Stecksén/Kungahuset.se

--Another Swedish update: Swedish authorities arrested someone in connection with the theft of royal regalia that happened in August. The stolen goods - two crowns and an orb - have not been recovered. [AP]

--Certainly you want to see some footage of Queen Margrethe in crafty mode, including trying on the hat/mask things she's making. She is a treasure. The Danish royal court released the footage in advance of an exhibition of the scenery and costumes created by the Queen. "Eventyrdronningen" ("Adventure Queen") opens later this month at the Amalienborg Museum. [YouTube]

--And finally, Luxembourg's grand ducal family released a new group family photo! There are also photos of the little kids here. [Twitter]

September 17, 2018
Birthday festivities are ahead:

--Reports are Queen Elizabeth II is planning on throwing a big private birthday party for the Prince of Wales in November, when he celebrates his 70th birthday. This sounds like the party thrown for his 60th, which was black tie (no, for those already asking, not a tiara event; that's really not the Windsor style). There were European royals in attendance as well as extended family members, but guest photos were mostly limited to pics in cars and just a couple of photos of the main family members were released from inside. (Here's a gallery of guests arriving.) I expect much the same this time around. [Hello, Zimbio]

--Speaking of Chaz, he and the Duchess of Cornwall teamed up last week with Princess Haya for a visit to the "Maiden" yacht, which originally featured the first all-female crew to sail the Whitbread Round the World Race and has now been refurbished to set sail on another around the world voyage for charity. Princess Haya's father, the late King Hussein, sponsored the yacht's original voyage, and she's helped with the refurbishment. This is a sharp dress on Camilla. [YouTube]

--Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit took a trip to Vestfold county. She got to wear a cute pink coat and pet a dog, what's not to enjoy? [ParisMatch]

--The Belgian royal family - and extended family, including Grand Duke Henri - gathered to mark 25 years since the passing of King Baudouin with a memorial mass. Luxarazzi has an on the scene report.

Here we go again:

--As noted last week, King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a church service, plus a later private dinner. Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore an Emilia Wickstead dress also owned by the Countess of Wessex; Queen Sonja wore her gift from the King, a gold rose brooch. The royal ladies wore commemorative bow medallions designed by Sonja. [NRK]

--From an earlier Mette-Marit engagement, this made me laugh: How do those royal ladies cope with high heels on duty? By throwing a pair of UGG slides in the car for immediate relief. [Twitter]

--Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia released a new picture of little nugget Prince Gabriel for his first birthday!
Erika Gerdemark, Kungahuset.se

--This is devastating: Brazil's National Museum, one of the largest museums of natural history in the Americas, was gutted in a major fire on Sunday night. Officials say almost 90% of their priceless collection has been destroyed. The building itself is another big loss; its rich history includes use as a residence for the Portuguese royal family and later for the Brazilian imperial family. [Guardian, BBC]

--Over at the Jewel Vault, QEII enjoyed a giggly day out with Anne and Chaz, and brought one of her famous diamonds along for the summer holiday.

--And finally, a little respect for another kind of queen: The Band of the Welsh Guards played "Respect" during the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace on Friday, the day of Aretha Franklin's funeral.

Things are picking up. But first:

--You want traditional dress? Here's your traditional dress: Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, and their children visited the Faroe Islands last week on the royal yacht. The visit was a mix of events in traditional Faroese dress, including a bit of traditional dancing, with some casual stuff thrown in. The Danish royal family explained that the national costumes and accompanying silver were gifts from the government and various municipalities, making them an extra appropriate choice. [ParisMatch, YouTube, Instagram]

--Over in Sweden, another young one was on duty: Prince Alexander made his first official visit to his duchy, Södermanland, where he opened his christening gift of an accessibility-oriented lookout point in a nature reserve. He was joined by his entourage, a.k.a. his parents, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. Sofia's choice of white pants for this woodsy occasion reminds me, as ever, that it must be nice to probably not have to do your own laundry. [Svenskdam]

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault, the Cambridges joined the annual Balmoral fun.

Coming up this week: A golden anniversary, the Danes host the first state visit of the season, plus a Sussex event...

Here we go:

--Looks like an exhibition of the Duchess of Sussex's wedding gown at Windsor Castle might be in the works. [Express]

--More from the Swedes! Yesterday was Princess Estelle's first day of school at Campus Manilla school in Stockholm, with her parents on hand to accompany her. [Photos: Raphael Stecksén/Kungahuset.se]

--It was National Day in Liechtenstein last week. Members of the princely family were of course on hand for the festivities, and Luxarazzi's got your content here and here.

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault, the big Balmoral post now includes the season's first sighting of Prince Philip.

Here we go:

--The engagement of Princess Ayako of Takamado, daughter of Princess Hisako and the late Prince Takamodo (a cousin of Emperor Akihito), with Kei Moriya is moving forward. The traditional official betrothal ceremony, called Nosai no Gi, was recently held. During the ceremony, a representative of the fiancé visited the Takamado residence and presented Ayako with traditional gifts including sea bream fish, sake, and rolls of silk. New photos of the couple were also released. [Japan Times, Imperial Family of Japan Blog]
Imperial Household Agency

--Meanwhile, I feel bad for Princess Mako. The status of the engagement between the Emperor's granddaughter and Kei Komuro is murky at best; after a delay reportedly caused by a financial dispute in his family, he's just left for law school in New York City and there are reports that the prospective groom has been told to present a "life plan" by Mako's parents. [Telegraph, Mainichi]

--Here's some cuteness: Princess Beatrix and wee King Willem-Alexander, pictured 50 years ago in the garden at Drakensteyn Castle.

--Ooh this is right up our alley, and an enjoyable read: "The Countess of Derby shows us her couture - and introduces us to her personal couturier." [Tatler]

--The picture in the article is the cherry on top of this hmm... sundae: "A French-born aristocrat is suing France for €351m (£313m) in damages, claiming it tricked his family out of inheriting the throne of Monaco." [Guardian]

--And finally, I very much dig this Garbo hat on Princess Beatrice, worn to accompany her grandmother to church this weekend. The Queen's brooch has been covered at the Jewel Vault, of course. [Sun]

Coming up this week: Mary gave us a couple things to discuss, at least...

Welcome to the summer slow season, where the royal news and appearances slow waaaaaaaay down, and so does the blog. Posts may be a little sporadic until things pick back up, so don't worry if you don't see one every day and enjoy a little summer yourself!

The Swedish royal family kept the royal news mill running last week:

--Princess Madeleine provided the most surprising news, as the Swedish royal court announced that her family will be moving back to the United States! They'll move to Florida in the fall. According to the announcement, it's a good time for the family since the kids are still pre-school age, and Madeleine will be focusing on the World Childhood Foundation's United States work. They released a new family photo to go along with the news.
Anna-Lena Ahlström, Kungahuset.se

--Princess Christina, sister of King Carl Gustaf, also chimed in with some big news: she's retiring! In an interview for her 75th birthday (which was August 3rd), she said the milestone birthday will mark the end of her royal duties. She will be missed, but she deserves the rest. Some new pictures were taken in conjunction with that, too. [Instagram]

--In regular Swedish news, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia shared a picture of their two boys enjoying the summer at Solliden. [Instagram]
prinsparet Instagram

--With the (as yet unsolved) mystery of the stolen Swedish royal regalia still swirling in my brain, I couldn't help but find this story fascinating: A Willem de Kooning painting worth an estimated $160 million was discovered some 30 years after it was stolen from an Arizona museum. The whys and hows of the situation remain an intriguing set of question marks. [Washington Post]

--And finally, a non-Swedish note: QEII has begun her Balmoral holiday (she's been there for a couple weeks), and we have our annual big Balmoral post up at the Jewel Vault, where you'll find all her appearances during her Scottish break.

Coming up this week: It's more of a working holiday in Spain...

Interesting but sad news to start us off:

--A jewel heist! Unfortunately not for fun in a movie this time: Sweden is missing two crowns and an orb from their royal regalia after thieves stole them from a church yesterday. The funeral crowns of Karl IV and his wife Queen Kristina date from 1611 and were originally buried with the couple, before being exhumed for display. Those two crowns and an orb were on display at Strängnäs Cathedral when they were stolen from their glass case while the church was open to the public. The thieves are thought to have fled on motorboat. The search for these priceless items is ongoing as of this writing. [Sydney Morning Herald]

--Were it anyone else, I'd have to say the matching band around the hat was overkill. But it's Princess Alexandra (opening a new supported living service last week), so it just makes me smile.
Royal Family

--The Duchess of Cornwall continued to live her best life last week, eating ice cream and hanging with Dame Judi Dench on the Isle of Wight. [ITV]

--And finally, Queen Margrethe continues to live her best creative life, showing off the new antependium she embroidered for the Gråsten Palace church.

Sparkle and cuteness, coming right up:

--Royal wedding in Germany: Princess Theodora of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg married Count Nikolaus Bethlen de Bethlen, of Hungarian nobility, over the weekend. The bride wore a small diamond fringe tiara that we've previously seen worn by her sister, Princess Anna of Bavaria, to the weddings of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine. The bride's father is a cousin of the late Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, husband of Princess Benedikte of Denmark. [Vanity Fair, Zimbio]

--Prince George turned 5, so Kensington Palace shared a snap of him cheesin' for the camera at his little brother's christening. Awww.
Matt Porteous/Kensington Palace

--Crown Prince Haakon turned 45, so the Norwegian royal family shared a few pictures of him celebrating his big day with the family at Mågerø.

--And finally, Luxembourg on parade in the U.K.: Prince Sébastien, a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, participated in the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Buckingham Palace as flag-bearer of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. His proud parents, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, attended the ceremony. Sébastien's grandfather, Grand Duke Jean, served in the Irish Guards in World War II and was later appointed Colonel. That's Jean in the portrait behind them (and regimental mascot Domhnall hanging out in front). The court's Twitter account has more from the day.

Summer always brings quality royal family time. For example:

--The Danish crown princely family disappeared for a while there (summer vacation, I assumes), but now they're at Gråsten Palace, the royal family's summer residence. Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, and the kids popped out to the gates to greet riders participating in an equestrian event. [YouTube]
Billed-Bladet screencap

--A family appearance for the Dutch royals too, as King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and the A-team did their annual summer photocall. I like this denim dress on Máx.

--Over at the Jewel Vault: the long-awaited debut of one of QEII's newer brooches!

--And finally, the photos from Prince Louis' christening were released. You can check them out at Kensington Palace's Instagram page.

Coming up this week: A birthday in Sweden, and more...

Let's go:

--A promising announcement from last week: King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will make a state visit to the United Kingdom, visiting the British royal family on October 23 and 24! Bring on the bling. Interested in what past Dutch/U.K. visits have brought in the sparkle department? Check out them out at the Jewel Vault: Britain visits the Netherlands in 1958, the Netherlands visits Britain in 1972 and again in 1982, and a couple official visits from Britain to the Netherlands.

--Crown Princess Victoria was named Öland Inhabitant of the Year in a ceremony at Solliden Palace, the Swedish royal family's summer home on the island. Victoria and her mother wore the folk dress of the area, which we also see them wear during Victoria's annual birthday celebrations.
Kungahuset.se

--Wimbledon is underway and the daily watch of the royal box is ongoing. Here's an interview with the Duchess of Kent, who presented the trophies for many years. Among the Wimbledon memories shared are her thoughts on the moment she famously comforted Jana Novotná in 1993.

--Just a lovely picture of the Princess Royal at the Highland Theological College Graduation Ceremony and Foundation Day, that's all. Nice when one's robes work out to match one's dress.

--And finally, it was Holyrood Week over at the Jewel Vault. Highlights included a garden party, a lovely repeat outfit, and the splendor of the Order of the Thistle Service.

Coming up this week: Prince Louis' christening is today and you know we'll have coverage of that, plus other stuff...

July 09, 2018
I hope you had a great holiday if you were among those celebrating this past weekend (hi, Canada and any getting their 4th on early), or I hope you will have a good holiday if you've yet to celebrate. A holiday on a Wednesday is a holiday week in my book, so we might be in and out a little bit this week. But first:

--Princess Eugenie visited her old school, Marlborough College, to open the newly refurbished Memorial Hall and I love this perfectly summery dress. On a more emotional note, Eugenie also posted her x-rays for Scoliosis Awareness Day. She had corrective surgery for scoliosis in 2002. [Instagram]

--Zara and Mike Tindall announced the name of their second daughter: Lena (pronounced lay-na) Elizabeth! Meanwhile, Zara and first daughter Mia were out this weekend to support Mike at a charity golf tournament. [Hello]

--Another imperial engagement in Japan: Princess Ayako, the third daughter of Princess Hisako and the late Prince Takamado, is to marry Kei Moriya. The formal announcement is set to happen today, the traditional ceremony making their engagement official will happen on August 12, and they'll marry on October 29. The couple were introduced by Princess Hisako. [Japan Times]

--And finally, in other Good Dress news, Queen Margrethe looks great here, no? She attended an anniversary dinner for the Royal Life Guard.

 Here we go:

--ICYMI, we wrapped up Days 4 and 5 of Royal Ascot over at the Jewel Vault, with appearances by Princess Beatrice, Princess Haya, Autumn Phillips, and Lady Sarah Chatto. (Day 4 here, Day 5 here.) Also, there was polo and the return of the Duke of Edinburgh.

--Sadly, the Danish royal court announced that Princess Elisabeth passed away on June 19 at the age of 83. Princess Elisabeth was the daughter of Hereditary Prince Knud and Hereditary Princess Caroline-Mathilde. Unlike her brothers, who lost their places in the line of succession and their titles when they married without official consent, Elisabeth never married and retained her title and place in the line to the throne. The Princess was often seen at the annual New Year gala banquet and other family events. Her funeral was held yesterday, with first cousins Queen Margrethe, Princess Benedikte, and Queen Anne-Marie in attendance. She will be laid to rest next to her partner, Danish director Claus Hermansen, with whom she lived for many years until his death in 1997. [Hello, Instagram]

--The Cambridges announced a date and time for the christening of Prince Louis: July 9, to be held at the Chapel Royal, St. James' Palace, at 4 pm.

--Speaking of the Cambridges, Prince William is currently on an official visit to Jordan, Israel, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. He was greeted in Jordan by Crown Prince Hussein, acting as regent while his parents are on a trip of their own, and the two hung out and watched England's World Cup match on delay. He is now in Israel, where his activities will include paying his respects at the grave of his great-grandmother, Princess Alice. [ITV]

--And finally: PUPPIES! Seven Labrador puppies were born at Villa Eikenhorst, home of King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and their family. They announced on social media that the family's dog, Nala, had three females and four males. They'll keep one and find homes for the other six when the puppies get a bit older.
